Attacks in Pakistan Continue

Taliban attacked on truck supplying NATO forces in Afghanistan. According the police there are four fuel tankers destroyed. Troops aboard NATO helicopters killed three Pakistani border soldiers and injured three others Thursday. Troops aboard NATO helicopters killed three Pakistani border soldiers and injured three others Thursday.  It was fourth attack since the closing of the Torkham crossing (a border crossing town in the Nangarhar province of Afghanistan and the Khyber Agency of Pakistan's Federally Administered Tribal Areas, right on the Durand Line border). About 80% of NATO's noncombat supplies bound for Afghanistan move by truck through Pakistan. Militants often carry out attacks on Afghan-bound NATO supply convoys moving through Pakistan, where authorities say it is difficult to provide round-the-clock security for the trucks. Term is a global concern that has to be solved as possible as quick. I always believe that these terrorism groups supported by other countries. The statistics on the terrorist attacks in Pakistan is very interesting and sad. In 2006, 657 terrorist attacks, including 41 of a sectarian nature, took place, leaving 907 people dead and 1,543 others injured according to pak institute for Peace sStudies (PIPS) security report. In 2007, 1,503 terrorist attacks and clashes, including all the suicide attacks, target killings and assassinations, resulted in 3,448 casualties and 5,353 injuries, according to the PIPS security report. These casualties figure 128 percent and 491.7 percent higher as compared with 2006 and 2005, respectively. The report states that Pakistan faced 60 suicide attacks (mostly targeted at security forces) during 2007, which killed at least 770, besides injuring another 1,574 people. PIPS report shows visible increase in suicide attacks after Lal Masjid operation. In 2008, the country saw 2,148 terrorist attacks, which caused 2,267 fatalities and 4,558 injuries.[3] Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) in its annual report indicated that there were at least 67 suicide attacks across Pakistan killing 973 people and injuring 2,318.[4] Further, a source in the investigation agencies disclosed that the total number of suicide blasts in Pakistan since 2002 rose to 140 (till 21 December 2008) while 56 bombers had struck in 2007.In 2009, the WORST of any year, 2,586 terrorist, insurgent and sectarian-related incidents were reported that killed 3,021 people and injured 7,334, according to the "Pakistan Security Report 2009" published by PIPS. These casualties figure 48 percent higher as compared to 2008. On the other hand, the rate of suicide attacks surged by one third to 87 bombings that killed 1,300 people and injured 3,600. We are in 2010 and attacks are still ongoing in Pakistan. The Pakistani Army gets into firefights almost daily with the Taliban.

Plan to Expand Rail Service Imperiled at State Level

Republicans running for governor in a handful of states could block, or significantly delay, one of President Obama’s signature initiatives: his plan to expand the passenger rail system and to develop the nation’s first bullet-train service. In his State of the Union address this year, the president called for building high-speed rail, and backed up his words with $8 billion in stimulus money, distributed to various states, for rail projects. But Republican candidates for governor in some of the states that won the biggest stimulus rail awards are reaching for the emergency brake. In Wisconsin, which got more than $810 million in federal stimulus money to build a train line between Milwaukee and Madison, Scott Walker, the Milwaukee County executive and Republican candidate for governor, has made his opposition to the project central to his campaign. Mr. Walker, who worries that the state could be required to spend $7 million to $10 million a year to operate the trains once the line is built, started a Web site, www.NoTrain.com, and has run a television advertisement in which he calls the rail project a boondoggle.

If there is one thing I'll say for just about any Republican candidate I have reviewed it is: 1) Common talking points; 2) Very limited analysis of the issues; and 3) No specific and concrete proposals.
Okay so why oppose high-speed rail? It works very well in Japan and throughout Europe. China is investing heavily in high-speed rail. Since I have to pay taxes anyway, I'd be very happy to have my dollars go to infrastructure that 1) could use our own natural resources (gas or coal) to provide the electricity; 2) moves a ton of freight 100 miles on a gallon of fuel; and 3) requires several million dollars per year to maintain. How much does the existing highway based infrastructure in Wisconson cost to maintain? How much do individual automobiles cost to maintain? How much of our military and strategic policy is based on maintaining access to oil from the Middle East? Where is the analysis from our supposed political leadership.
